Trust me, we have all been there, whether you are trying to pay off a credit card that you let get a little bit out of control over the holidays, or trying to make it to the next pay cheque. The truth is there are no ‘easy fixes’ and no ‘one-size fits all’ solution (no matter what you hear on the radio).
You are the one that needs to be in the driver’s seat when it comes to managing your finances.
- Assess your spending: How much are you charging on your credit cards? Is your bank account running dry? Do you buy things you later regret? You need to take a step back and assess your entire spending, look at your bank and credit statements as well as any receipts you may have.
- Think about a ‘day in the life’ of you: Do you buy coffee every morning? Do you drive to work? Do you buy your lunch? There are many things that we buy, but then we don’t ‘count’ in our budget. We need to account for all of our money gobblers to be realistic in our approach to budgeting.
- Decide what it is you want to do: Do you want to start a budget? Are you planning to pay down debt? Are you trying to save money for a purchase? You will not end up at the intended destination if you haven’t figured out where you are going.
We also know from experience that you cannot always do it by yourself. Sometimes you are required to take a refresher course when you have run through too many yellow lights (and red) when it comes to managing your finances. That is when a lot of people turn to credit counselling. They know that they are going to be listened to, not just about their debt, but about their whole financial situation. They are going to be asked what their financial goals are and they are going to be given options that will put them on the road to reaching their goals.
It may seem easy to hope that your finances will work their way out or that enlisting the help of a company that promises to wipe away your debt worries will take care of your financial situation. Too often we look for the quick fix and never really solve the issue that created the financial burden – that is what meeting with a credit counsellor can help you do.
